UF, UCF Favorites Heading Into Florida College Club Tennis State Chps.

February 14, 2012 10:17 AM
Tennis on campus mediawallThe two dominating teams from the 2011-12 Florida "USTA Tennis on Campus" collegiate club tennis circuit will be the favorites to again reach the final on Feb. 18-19, 2012, when the USTA Florida "Tennis on Campus" Championships are held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Teams will be competing for bids to represent Florida at the USTA National Campus Championships in April.

The three-time defending state champion University of Florida (UF) club tennis team will have its work cut out against the upstart University of Central Florida (UCF) team, which this year defeated UF in two finals, at the FSU Capital Challenge in Tallahassee, and at the UCF Knightro Cup on their home courts in Orlando. UF in turn defeated UCF in finals at the UF Gatorbowl in Gainesville, and last month's FGCU Dirty Bird Classic in Ft. Myers.

The USTA Florida "Tennis on Campus" circuit in 2011-2012 consisted of six events in Tallahassee, Gainesville, Tampa, Orlando Ft. Myers and Miami, leading to this weekend's Florida "Tennis on Campus" Championships in Altamonte Springs. Other schools joining UF and UCF in the eight-team championships field will be Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida State University, Rollins College, Stetson, University of Miami, and University of South Florida.

The University of South Florida is the only school during the 2011-12 season to wrestle a title away from UF or UCF, winning the men's singles championship at their home court USF Bullrun tournament in Tampa in October.

"Tennis on Campus provides an amazing opportunity for college kids," says USTA Florida Team Tennis Coordinator Michelle Brown. "Players can walk onto club tennis, play socially and/or travel to the other college circuit events.  I have seen some amazing leadership develop from this program.  Club players organize and lead their teams in social, competitive, and volunteer events. I have seen many of these players evolve into tennis teaching professionals, tennis league coordinators, and incredible community volunteers.  All are driven by their love of the game."

Last year UF defeated UCF 23-19 in the state championships final, clinching the match with a 6-5 win in the mixed doubles. Last year UF and UCF appeared in every tournament final during the USTA Florida "Tennis on Campus" season.

The USTA "Tennis on Campus" team format features men's and women's singles and mixed doubles, with a minimum of two men and two women per team. The format features World TeamTennis (WTT) scoring, where the first up to five games wins the match, with a 12-point supertiebreak if the match is tied at four games all. Total cumulative games determine the overall winning team of each match, but if the trailing team wins the final mixed doubles match, the match goes into "overtime." Overtime give the trailing team the chance to win cumulative game points and still win the match, but overtime and the match ends once the leading team wins one more game in overtime. The WTT scoring format also features no-ad scoring, player substitutions, and player coaching is allowed.

The USTA Florida Section will receive three bids to the USTA National Campus Championships for this weekend's winning team, the losing finalist, and the team leading or next-highest in the USTA Florida "Tennis on Campus" point standings. The 2012 USTA National Campus Championships, featuring the Top 64 college and university club tennis teams in the country, will be held on April 12-14, 2012, in Cary, N.C., at the Cary Tennis Park.

USTA Tennis On Campus
The USTA's Tennis On Campus program is designed to provide college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a varsity program via college/university "club" tennis teams. Perfect for athletes who have chosen not to make the jump from high school to college varsity, Tennis On Campus offers co-ed team-based play (using the World TeamTennis scoring format), regional and national championship competition, and helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years. Currently, the program is offered on over 500 college campuses and services over 30,000 students.
