Shelly Licorish Bynum, USA Tennis Florida’s Community Coordinator, Wins ATA Tournament

The American Tennis Association (ATA) organized in November 30, 1916 held it’s 87th Annual National Championships August 1-7, 2004 in Houston, Texas.  Over 600 players participated in this year’s championship; Junior Events (10-18 years) and Adult Events (Open – 80 years).

The American Tennis Association has had champions such as Althea Gibson (10 time Women’s Open Champion); Arthur Ashe (6 time Men’s Open Singles Champion); Leslie Allen; Zina Garrison current Fed Cup Team Captain and Olympic Women’s Tennis Coach; Rodney Harmon-USTA, Director, Men’s Tennis (1985 Men’s Singles); Lori McNeil (Asst. Olympic Women’s Tennis Coach).

Florida section’s own Shelly Licorish Bynum-USA Tennis Florida Community Coordinator, won the 2004 Women’s 45 Singles Event by defeating Denise Lancaster of Upper Marlboro, MD 6-1, 6-2.  Shelly also participated in Women’s 35 Doubles with partner Cheryl Davis of Houston, TX and made it to the semifinals.

Shelly who is a life member and volunteer for the ATA helped with player registration, membership and ticket sales for the Gala Banquet honoring Zina Garrison current USA Federation Cup Team Captain and 2004 Olympic Tennis Team coach.
