Back in 1992-1993, Larry Jaben of Jacksonville was tapped on the shoulder.  The USA League Tennis Local Coordinator for the Jacksonville area asked Larry to help him that season.  Larry said yes, never realizing that he was setting a major volunteer career in motion.

Together with hand selected committees, they set out to develop and coordinate a consistent league program in their district and to implement a long-range plan to grow tennis in the area.  For the last 12 years, that’s exactly what has happened.  Consistency, persistence and “doing it right” have really paid off!  During these 12 years, Larry has been a local league coordinator for all divisions, Men’s and Women’s Adult, Mixed Doubles, Seniors, Super Seniors, and Super 70’s.  Have an empty slot?  Larry will step in and fill it until another qualified volunteer is found!

Larry’s volunteer work didn’t stop with leagues.  He has been a District Director and a USA Tennis Florida Board Member for 6 years, (1996-2002), and has served on the Resource Council, Professional Events Committee, Adult League Council, Committee Chair of Section Rules and Regulations, and Committee Chair of the Grievance Committee.  Larry is currently a member of the Leagues Council.

Jacqui Brunton, our Director of Leagues, comments,  “Larry Jaben continues to be an exceptional and well respected volunteer for the Organization, and specifically, the USA League Tennis Programs. He is a doer, a go-getter, and is diligent in his efforts to grow the game of tennis.  He constantly makes himself readily available to assist with any assignment or event that is requested of him. His support and love for the game of tennis and USA Tennis Florida is evident in everything that he does. He is always up to the challenge. Having worked with Larry for so many years, I continue to admire and respect not just the volunteer, but also the upstanding person that he is. This year especially, he has been bombarded with League Section issues and has remained diligent and a trooper throughout.”

Dede Allen, our new Community Consultant in the Jacksonville area has already recognized what a wonderful volunteer Larry is, “Larry is very active here in Jacksonville.  He comes to all the First Coast Tennis Foundation meetings and rarely misses the North Florida Professional Tennis Association meeting.  He constantly encourages league play and is there for all the pros.”

Quotes from other volunteers have a similar theme.

Paddi Valentine, current Secretary of USA Tennis Florida says, “I don’t even have a vote and I vote for Larry!  Year in and year out he has been a faithful and productive volunteer doing whatever he was asked.”

Celia Rehm, Vice President of USA Tennis Florida, says, “I can certainly vouch for his long term commitment, his passion and love for leagues, and his effective leadership that has produced very good league results over the years.”

Larry has been married to his beautiful bride Helen for 54 years. He has 3 children and 5 grandchildren.  When asked why he likes to volunteer in Tennis, his answer is simply, “I enjoy meeting people, love playing, officiating, and teaching tennis.  Most important, I truly enjoy the people I work with in our volunteer tennis community.  They make it fun!”

Thank you Larry for all you do, and for how much fun you make it for all those other volunteers and players out there!
