This USA Tennis Florida regional event, staged at Countryside Country Club on Saturday, August 28th, and sponsored by the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, featured beginning players ages 12 & under from Hernando, Hillsborough, and Pinellas Counties. The day began with 40 players from 6 teams playing 2 hours of exciting round-robin team tennis using the Ralleyball format of play. Coaches, volunteers and parents all took an active roll either assisting on court, cheering for their teams or snapping photos. According to Roger Cypriano, USPTA tennis professional and captain of the Avila Lightning team, “This is the first tournament-type play for our kids and they loved it!”

“Awesome” echoed USPTA pro and Physical Education teacher Nancy Barnes of the Dominators team. Susan Whalen, co-captain of the Dominators, noted that “our players gained so much confidence today…what a tremendous format for them to learn and improve.”  Robin Kippenberger was amazed at “how much fun” his son and Aces player Cody was having.

Following tennis and pizza lunch, the players jumped back on the courts for the chance to earn USA Tennis goodies in the Hit for Prizes event. The on-court agenda concluded with the awards ceremony in which all players received USA Team Tennis participation medals and 2 deserving winners received the Sportsmanship Awards – Rosie Witherell of the Blue Sharks and Chandler Walker of the host Aces. Players, coaches and parents got to cool off at the day’s closing activity - a pool party complete with DJ music and games – a great finish to a memorable day.

Thanks to all the players, coaches, Suncoast Tennis Foundation volunteers, parents, Countryside Country Club, and USA Tennis Florida for being a part of this year’s event. Until next year, GO PLAY!
