Jim Berry’s Benefit for the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation Gets Two-Court Support

Stars from Tennis and Basketball to Appear and Provide Great Auction Items

CBS4’s Sports Director Jim Berry has secured the support from both the tennis and basketball courts for the second annual Jim Berry Tennis Classic presented by Bill Ussery Motors and BankUnited being held on April 16, 2005 at the Royal Palm Tennis Club in Miami, FL (7001 SW 98th St; Pinecrest, FL 33156).  The Event benefits the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation (GMTF), a non-profit charitable organization that organizes and funds tennis programs for inner-city youth at public parks and schools in Miami-Dade County.

Tennis stars joining Berry include Lori McNeil, Zina Garrison, Harold Solomon, Rodney Harmon, Juan Nunez and Butch Buchholz.  Stars from the basketball court are former Miami Heat players Tim Hardaway and Glen Rice.  Also attending are Miami Dolphins players Rob Konrad, Sam Madison and Sage Rosenfels and retired pro football star George Mira.

Berry has also secured an array of great auction items from the sports world and top destinations.  Shaquille O’Neil, the Miami Heat’s newest star, has donated tickets to a Heat game that include a meet and greet and photo opportunity before the game.  Another world-class experience is a 2005 US Open packages that includes President’s Box Seats donated by the United States Tennis Association, roundtrip air courtesy of JetBlue Airways, hotel for two nights and an autographed Andy Roddick tennis racquet.  For those who want to relax, Club Med has donated a vacation for 4 to your choice to Punta Cana or Columbus Isle.

The Greater Miami Tennis Foundation provides education and tennis programs to develop the character, self-esteem and discipline for at-risk youth.  The Foundation works in cooperation with the Florida Tennis Association, the United States Professional Tennis Association, City of Miami Parks & Recreation, Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, Miami-Dade Schools and other agencies involved in youth programs.

The Event begins with a tennis pro-am at 9:00 a.m. with amateurs competing with and against local professionals. The tennis exhibition featuring the celebrity players will run from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  A luncheon and auction will follow at 12:30 p.m.  In addition to these activities, local junior tennis players will participate in a point-a-thon, where the players raise funds by keeping the ball in play.

Berry has been the CBS4 Sports Director since 1996.  He anchors the CBS4 weeknight sportscasts and hosts the Sunday night sports show “Jim Berry’s Sports Rap.”  He also anchors CBS4’s Miami Dolphins coverage as the host of “Crunch Time” CBS4’s Dolphins pre-game program, and “Sports Zone” a live sports show.
