Having retired from 30 years in the U.S. Diplomatic Service, with postings mostly in sub-Sahara Africa, Christine Shurtleff was certainly used to challenges.  Not enough courts and too many leagues could be a normal LLC scheduling nightmare.  Not for Christine.  Even with such challenges, she has managed to continue to increase participation in the Gainesville USA League Tennis program for the entire eight years that she has been the Local League Coordinator for District 4-North.  The Gainesville/Lake City area League participation has grown enormously over the past five years, from 826 registrations in 2000 to 2424 registrations in 2004.   And 30% of the participants in 2004 were new USTA members!

Christine is the sole LLC in Gainesville.  She organizes all eight Leagues: Adult, Adult Mixed, Senior, Senior Mixed, Super Seniors, Super 70’s, Combo Adult, and Combo Senior.  Needless to say with very few and very small tennis facilities in the area, it is not an easy task scheduling these twelve Leagues.

One year ago, Christine was appointed the USA Tennis Florida Alachua County Representative.  And if that wasn’t enough work, she has recently founded the Gainesville Area Community Tennis Association, where she currently serves as the 1st Vice President.

One of Christine’s most exciting volunteer opportunities came last December when because of her record of growing USA League Tennis, she was invited to represent USA Tennis Florida as one of only twelve volunteers nationwide at a League Summit meeting at USTA Headquarters in New York, which focused on the USTA’s commitment to League growth.

Jacqui Brunton, Director of Leagues for USA Tennis Florida, states very simply, “Christine’s contributions to the league program for the past eight years have been phenomenal!  In addition to her league, county and CTA responsibilities, she now is working on a plan to have additional facilities built in the Gainesville area.”

When asked why she volunteers, Christine quickly responds, “I volunteer for tennis because I love the game of tennis.  But more importantly, it is a wonderful way to meet people from all walks of life and to feel like a contributing member of the local community.”

Thank you, Christine.  We are so happy you decided to retire to Gainesville!  Your success, your dedication, and your energy all add up to your incredible contribution to our USA Tennis Florida mission, “To promote and develop Tennis in Florida.”
