USTA HONORS BRUCE KARR OF PALM BEACH, FLA., AS THE WINNER OF THE BRAD PARKS AWARD

May 4, 2005 02:54 PM
The USTA announced that Bruce Karr of Palm Beach, Fla., has won the 2004 Brad Parks Award.  This award is designed to honor to a person or group, in judgment of the USTA Wheelchair Committee, that has been instrumental in providing opportunities to wheelchair players through the development of programs that promote the growth of wheelchair tennis at the sectional or national level.

Karr has been involved with Wheelchair tennis since 1989, when he started a 19-player tournament.  That tournament is now that largest wheelchair tennis tournament in the world, and is known as the “Florida Open International Wheelchair Tennis Championships.”  Last year 205 players from 25 different states and 25 countries participated in the Open.  The Florida Open also played an integral role in selecting many Paralympic players for the 2004 games in Athens.

Karr has developed the Florida Open into such a large tournament that every year some entries have to be turned away. The entry fee includes hotel accommodations for six days and five nights; breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days; free happy hour; transportation from and to the airport; daily round trip transportation from the hotel to the tournament; physical therapy/massages and a repair station. It was named the 2002 ITF (International Tennis Federation) worldwide “Tournament of the Year” as voted on by the players.
