Couple Earns August USA Tennis Florida Spotlight

August 9, 2005 03:19 PM
USA Tennis Florida district 15 is home to two inspiring, tennis-promoting individuals: Bob and Becky Laemel.  This couple, also known as “B&B,” has earned the honor of being USA Tennis Florida’s volunteers of the month for August.  Congratulations B&B!

Retired educators and coaches, the Laemels reside in Hobe Sound.  Only having played tennis for a mere eight years, this couple has certainly made an impact on tennis in district 15.  Within the past year, the couple has taken responsibilities with the USA Tennis Florida LLC Mixed and Combo leagues in their district.  Director of Leagues Jacqui Brunton and the USA Tennis Florida League Council feel the Laemels are exceptional volunteers in their community and deserve to be honored.

“On the Treasure coast if you mention B&B and tennis, everyone knows who you are referring to: Bob & Becky,” North River Shores Tennis Club General Manager Karin DeCoste said.

B&B have had many successes in their initial involvement with USA Tennis Florida.  District 15, led by devoted volunteers such as the Laemels, has had a successful first mixed season and captains’ meeting, and B&B worked together with others in the district to develop a local community tennis association.  The Laemels were instrumental in the local “Combo Kick-off” where the first combo season was introduced to district 15.

DeCoste raves about the Laemel’s passion for tennis.  Becky is the volunteer president of the Women's Team Tennis League in Martin County which organizes play for over 350 ladies in the area.  Bob has recently earned his teaching certificate from the USPTA; he volunteers as an instructor at North River Shores TC in the Junior Academy.  “The list goes on …” DeCoste said.

The Laemels agree that their involvement in tennis has provided an opportunity for them to give back to their community while enjoying the benefits of a life-time sport.  “It is also extremely rewarding to utilize our previous professional experiences in the fields of health, physical education and athletics to promote and develop tennis in district 15,” Rebecca said.

“District 15 and the sport of tennis have definitely been blessed with such a keen and dedicated couple,” DeCoste said.  “May they never move!”  Thank you B&B!
