Swim and Racquet Center of Boca Raton – 2005 USTA Facility Award Winner

September 9, 2005 09:38 AM

The USTA announced the Swim & Racquet Center of Boca Raton, FL, as one of 10 winners of its 24th annual USTA Facility Awards Program, recognizing excellence in the construction and/or renovation of public tennis facilities throughout the country.

The beautifully landscaped Swim & Racquet Center of Boca Raton is surrounded by blossoming flower gardens, shrubs and seven different types of trees that serve as a noise buffer from the outside world.  The Racquet Center is surrounded by water on three sides with a footbridge connecting the parking lot.  This facility showcases 26 outdoor courts with two stadium courts with divider fencing, windscreens and four lights.  With 18 feet between courts, the area houses an awning, tables, chairs and a water fountain for spectators and players.  In addition, there is permanent seating for 180 spectators who may also seek relief from the sun at patio tables under umbrellas or the patio cabana.  This wheelchair-accessible facility has 600 members and a 1,000 sq. ft. pro shop featuring a player’s lounge with a big screen TV, chairs and sofas; free public phone; library; dressing rooms; vending machines, and ping pong and Foosball tables.

The names of the 10 recognized facilities will be inscribed on a large wall plaque displayed in the lobby of the USTA National Tennis Center, home of the US Open.  Each of the facilities will also receive a one-year complimentary membership to the USTA, a certificate of recognition as well as a wooden wall plaque and large sign to display on the outside of their facility.

“We are pleased to recognize these facilities for their hard work and commitment to achieving higher standards,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive Community Tennis, USTA.  “Though we only named 10 facilities as winners we are pleased with the dedication and support of facilities across the country in helping the USTA to promote and develop the growth of tennis.

The Swim and Racquet Center of Boca Raton was one of three in the large public tennis facility category to earn this national award.

Facilities under consideration must be under the jurisdiction of one of the following: a parks and recreation department, an educational institution, a non-profit corporation or private or commercially owned and operated facilities that offer USTA and other grow the game programs to the public.  Facilities were judged upon overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics: graphics, including the use of signs and landscaping; amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social area; and their involvement in programs supporting the USTA and the growth of tennis.
