Tennis Captain Ed Thompson Honored in October

October 4, 2005 07:28 AM
Edward J. Thompson of Estero, FL, (district 18; region 7,) has been selected as the USA Tennis Florida volunteer of the month for October.  Ed was first introduced to the USTA in 1997, and he has captained more than 20 teams since!

Ed retired in 1997 with wife Sandy, and they have three grown, married sons Kevin, Steve and David.  Ed and Sandy are the proud grandparents of eight!

Ed served as an active member of the District 18 Rules Committee in 2003 and 2004, and he is presently serving his second year as chairperson of the District 18 Grievance Committee.

In 2002, after three consecutive years as captain of three different teams, Ed’s 3.0 men’s team won the district in both the Fall and Winter seasons and became the winners at the sectional level, earning the opportunity to compete nationally.  The team placed fifth at Nationals!

Ed was moved up from 3.0 to 3.5 in 2003, and he captained a Senior Men's 3.5 team which competed in the Fall and Winter seasons, won the District and qualified for the Sectionals at the Florida Tennis Center Daytona Beach.

In 2004 Ed’s three teams qualified for Sectionals in Daytona.

“Having three teams in one year qualify for Sectional play was something special,” Ed said.  “With three trips to Daytona for the 50s, 60s and 70s, we became very familiar with the route.”

With eight successful years as captain of 22 teams, Ed said he is not finished.  He plans to add another Super 70s team in 2006 to compete in both the Fall and Winter seasons.  He will also captain the 3.5 Men’s Senior and Super Senior teams.

“I love the game for the games sake,” Ed said.  “I love the people associated with the game and volunteering accentuates my positives and brings the best out of me.”

Thank you for sharing your passion for Tennis, Ed.  Congratulations!
