St. Thomas University’s BRUCE CARRINGTON Honored

November 23, 2005 12:27 PM

St. Thomas University head tennis coach Bruce Carrington has been awarded the USTA/ITA Community Service Award, given for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations, inner city, suburban or rural programs.

This awards program, which began in 2003, was open to more than 2,000 ITA head and assistant coaches at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College levels.

With 30 years of coaching experience and seven with St. Thomas, Carrington stands out in his own community and the tennis community as a whole.  He was nominated to serve on the advisory board for the City of Miami Gardens Parks & Recreation Department for 2005.

Beginning July 1 of this year, Carrington has been the site director at the Ashe-Buchholtz Tennis Center in Miami for the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation/Childrens Trust "Out of Schools" Program.  Carrington supervises programs and sessions such as First Serve, nutrition, tennis instruction, literacy, field trips, homework tutoring, and fitness for 90 to 120 minority youth ages 5-18 per week.

On the St. Thomas University campus, Carrington is the director for the USTA Outreach Program.  Since February 2005, Carrington has helped provide introductory tennis lessons for community youth, undergraduate students, staff and faculty.

Also, Carrington’s team members assist in local elementary school field trips to the St. Thomas campus; they spend time mentoring visiting youth on life as a college student and give tips on how to prepare for enrollment.

Bruce, thank you for representing Miami, USTA Florida and the statewide tennis community with your excellence on a national level.  Congratulations!!
