10-Year Volunteer Marvin Hayes Honored This Holiday

December 5, 2005 12:05 PM

Punta Gorda is home to a shining 10-year USTA Florida volunteer Marvin Hayes.  Marvin is known by his fellow players and volunteers as a spry 70 year old, and an extremely active tennis player, playing about six days a week and sometimes more than once a day!

Marvin’s nomination for USTA Florida volunteer of the month came from his local league coordinator Linda Huber who raved about his dedication to tennis:

“Why is Marvin outstanding?” Huber said.  “Because for the last five or six years he has captained numerous teams; he attends and participates in all captain’s meetings; he endlessly recruits players; his teams are always registered on time; he rarely forfeits matches; his scores are promptly entered or confirmed; and I can’t remember having any kind of player or team dispute. He is just the best!!”

In one championship year, Marvin captained five teams: a 6.0 super senior men’s team, a 6.0 adult mixed team, a 6.0 senior mixed team, a 3.0 adult men’s team, and a 3.0 senior men’s team!

“One day I went to one of Marvin’s 3.0 adult men’s matches and what did I see,” Huber said.  “Marvin Hayes was playing singles against a 24-year-old and frustrating the heck out of him!”

Marvin has generously given of his time and energy for the sport we all love, and USTA Florida thanks him by honoring him during the holiday month of December.  Thank you, Marvin, for being such an asset to our organization and tennis in Florida.  Congratulations!!
