At the recreation level often times the backhand volley is the weaker of the two sides.  To strengthen the weaker side (the backhand volley), when defending against the ad service box prepare with the racquet favoring the left side of your body.  Place the racquet face opposite your left shoulder and begin with a backhand grip.  Most opponent’s returns from the ad court are going to go crosscourt toward the net player’s left (his backhand) so overload the left and be prepared for where the majority of returns are going.  If the ball does go to your right (your forehand) you can easily make the transition for a forehand.  Try it, many of the pros do!
