January 25, 2006 11:07 AM

Daytona Beach, FL – Easter Seals of Volusia, Flagler Counties and USTA  Florida have teamed up to offer Tennis Everyone!, a series of clinics specifically designed to teach the sport of tennis to children with disabilities alongside children who are able-bodied. Led by specially trained athletes, including Port Orange resident and two-time Paralympics tennis silver medalist Nancy Olson, Tennis Everyone! clinics will offer children who are mobility impaired the chance to play tennis.

USTA Florida Director of Community Development Linda Curtis looks forward to the success of Tennis Everyone!

“USTA Florida is thrilled to be a part of this inclusive children’s program,” Curtis said.  “The advantage of this type of program is that children who are both mobility impaired and able bodied learn while having fun playing tennis together.  Everyone benefits!”

Tennis Everyone! clinics will be held on Saturdays, February 11 through April 8. Children in kindergarten through second grade will participate from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and children in grades three through six will participate from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tennis Everyone! will be held at the Airport Center Park Courts, located behind Creekside Middle School in Port Orange.

Tennis Everyone! will utilize sports wheelchairs to serve children of all mobility levels. This program is open to any child who has a mobility impairment that makes participation in standard tennis difficult or impossible, regardless of whether they use a wheelchair in their daily lives for mobility.

“By giving children the opportunity to play a sport, you give a child the life skills needed to succeed including communication, teamwork and commitment,” says Lynn Sinnott, President of Easter Seals.  “In addition to boosting self-esteem and self-confidence, the Tennis Everyone! program will be a fun and healthy experience for children with disabilities.”

Easter Seals has long been recognized as a leader in providing services for children and adults with disabilities and their families which help them live better lives.  Tennis Everyone! appropriately fits into Easter Seals’ objective to offer programs which help people with disabilities live with greater independence.
