February OVERHEAD SMASH: Timmy Berg

February 10, 2006 03:56 PM

On February 17, 13-year-old Timmy Berg of Sarasota will head to Boston; unfortunately not to do what he loves, play tennis.  Timmy will be at Mass General for Proton Radiation treatment.

In 2005 Timmy was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma of the mid-orbit, (a cancerous tumor behind his eye).  USTA Florida has chosen Timmy as the February OVERHEAD SMASH because of his tennis fervor and talent, but most of all for his great attitude.

USTA Florida Director of Competitive Tennis Andy Gladstone had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time with Timmy this summer during two Florida team events.

“It was refreshing to watch Timmy’s passion and enthusiasm for the game. Timmy simply loves to play tennis,” Andy said. “Not only does Timmy give 100 percent on the court; he is a true gentleman. Timmy plays hard, but he is everyone’s friend on and off the court.”

Having almost completed his first stage of chemotherapy, Timmy will begin four more rounds in St. Petersburg after he returns from Boston in mid-April.

Timmy’s father Tim said, “God willing Timmy will be finished with everything around May 5.

“It has been overwhelming but extremely comforting to us that so many truly care about Timmy,” Tim said.  “As far as the Berg Family is concerned, USTA Florida is the greatest section in the country. We have some of the greatest members one could hope for.”

The Berg family thanks the Florida tennis community for their thoughts, concerns, presents, phone calls and most of all, prayers for Timmy.

Andy believes in Timmy’s ability to conquer.

“Timmy is going through the biggest match of his young life,” Andy said.  “I have faith that he will take his competitive spirit to this challenge.”
