March VOM Glen Howe makes a difference in Central Florida

February 28, 2006 01:06 PM

USTA clinician and national trainer Glen Howe, USPTA Master Professional and PTR Professional, of Winter Springs has been busy traveling throughout the state of Florida for the past 18 months, leading tennis in-services and workshops.  His exceptional volunteerism has not gone unnoticed; USTA Florida would like to honor Glen as the March Volunteer of the Month!

As the director of tennis for Tuscawilla Country Club, Glen is one of nine national trainers within the state.  Central Florida and the surrounding areas count on Glen to direct recreational coach workshops (RCWs) throughout the year.  RCWs are six-hour, on-court tennis teacher clinics where between 20 and 40 recreational coaches are trained to introduce tennis to large groups of people.

USTA Florida Associate Executive Director, Community Tennis Andy McFarland nominated Glen for volunteer of the month.

“Glen is such a wonderful tennis volunteer for our organization. He is outstanding on the court.  His passion and sense of humor are displayed through his “never say no” attitude when it comes to requests to lead tennis workshops that are not even in his community,” McFarland said.  “I never have to worry about how Glen’s workshops go because I know they are going to be exceptional every time!”

In addition to training coaches in RCWs throughout the state, Glen enthusiastically accepts to lead PE Teacher In-Services from coast to coast, traveling to Sarasota and Manatee and Miami-Dade Counties to introduce tennis-teaching methods to more than 125 PE Teachers.

“Tennis has been so good to me over the years,” Glen said.  “I feel like it’s time for me to give back a little bit.”
