Ginnard Named to United States Women’s 50 Tennis Team

The United States Tennis Association selected Mary Ginnard of Ft. Lauderdale, FL to join the 2006 United States Women’s 50 Tennis Team.  Ginnard will compete in this year’s Maria Esther Bueno Cup international tennis competition in Durban, South Africa, April 17-23, 2006.  This year’s competition will be played on hard courts. Her teammates are Tina Karwasky of Glendale, CA, Sherri Bronson, the captain, from Scottsdale, and Carolyn Nichols of Lodi, CA and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

The US placed third in the competition in 2005 in Perth, Australia.  The US will attempt to regain the Cup when it competes in Australia against dozens of the world’s top women’s tennis teams.  This prestigious Cup is for international tennis team competition for women age 50 and older.  It is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Mary Ginnard played on the winning US Women’s Bueno Cup team in 2003-4, and on the 1999 Margaret Court Cup team.  In addition, Ginnard has won more than a dozen major tennis titles including three in 2005: the 50 Hard Court Singles, and 50 Grass and Indoor Doubles titles. She also won the world doubles title in 1999 in Amsterdam in the 45 doubles division. She is currently ranked #1 in doubles by the USTA in the 50 and over division, and #4 in singles.

Ginnard is the head tennis professional at the Lauderdale Tennis Club in Ft. Lauderdale. She is an outstanding athlete, and has been a top ranked paddle tennis player and a paddle tennis teaching professional. She has one son, Michael, a freshman at the University of Florida.

Mary brings a wealth of successful competitive tennis experience and versatility to this year’s US squad.   As one of only four players chosen from the United States’ top women’s senior players, Ms. Ginnard will add strength and valuable singles and doubles tournament experience to the US team.

The United States Tennis Association owns and stages the US Open and selects the men’s and women’s teams that compete in major Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Olympic Games competition.  It also selects and sponsors top US players in various age groups for the USTA tennis teams, including the US Women’s 50 team, that represent the US in international team tennis competitions against some of the world’s best players.
