March 28, 2006 10:11 AM

The West team successfully defended its Florida Cup championship 29-21 on March 25-26 at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club over the East in the USTA Florida intersectional team competition.
The West squad co-captained by Florida Cup commissioner Clem Hopp and Adult Competitive Council Chairman Mark Taylor claimed the title for the third time in as many years.  The West team won seven out of ten age divisions including 5-0 sweeps in the 40's, 75', and 80's.
In the opening series of singles matches the West jumped out to a 14-6 lead led by Fred Farzanegan's 3 1/2 hour win over Lou Monte 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.  The East team rebounded in the afternoon doubles winning six of ten matches including three set wins by Geoff Moore/Glen Chancellor in the 60's and Joe Bouquin/Roger Ashcroft in the 55's.
Leading 18-12 going into the Sunday finale; the West needed to win eight matches to keep the Cup.  Commissioner Hopp clinched the winning point for the West by dropping Norm Schellinger in straight sets to keep the Cup on the West coast.  Marc Mazo (55's) and Bogdan Baidau (40's) won epic matches in the final set to close out the East.
The Florida Cup matches were first played in 2004 and is an intersectional team competition that was developed by USTA Florida Vice President Dan Casey.  Casey was in attendance over the weekend and was extremely pleased with the way the event has grown since its inception.  Tournament director Bill Beverley hopes to continue the tradition that is developing by getting the Florida Cup matches to the level which would make it the premier team competition in the country.
"Many thanks to the volunteers, Naples Bath and Tennis as host, and Commissioner Hopp for the time, energy, resources that made the 2006 Florida Cup a tremendous success.  In a few years; these matches should rival any team event in the country" said ACC Chairman Mark Taylor.
