April OVERHEAD SMASH: Women’s 45 Competitor Myke Bodisch

March 31, 2006 09:05 AM

Unseeded Myke Bodisch of Santa Rosa Beach impressed players and spectators alike at the USTA National Senior Women's 45 Clay Courts at the Houston Racquet Club March 12-19.  Myke conquered one top-10 ranked player at a time, defeating numbers 9,7, 4 and 5 in the opening round, and then an unseeded player for the title!

“I went into the tournament unseeded, but felt confident, mentally and physically, that I was ready to play,” Myke said.   “I'm not sure that it's all sunk in yet!”

This being Myke’s first year in the 45s, she was hoping for a great start to the year.  She is thrilled, (and very surprised) to begin the season with such success.

Myke’s doubles partner Renee Broxson was injured and unable to play in Houston; Myke therefore was able to focus her energy on singles play, which obviously paid off for her!

“We're hoping to have Renee back on the court again soon so we can resume our doubles play, as well as Renee playing singles too,” Myke said.

In 2003, this lively duo won a gold ball in doubles at the 40 Clay Court Nationals in Pensacola.

During the three years Myke played tennis for the University of Alabama, she set (and still holds) school records for most wins in a season and most consecutive wins!  Myke then played for the University of Arkansas for one year before graduating in 1985.

Myke has been the Director of Tennis at Hidden Dunes Beach and Tennis Resort in Destin since the resort opened in May of 1985.  In addition to her involvement and participation in USTA tournaments, Myke is a member of the USPTA, and the National Senior Women’s Tennis Association (NSWTA).

She grew up in Little Rock, AR, where she spent her childhood playing junior tennis.  In 2004, Myke was inducted into the Arkansas Tennis Hall of Fame.

As for her future tennis plans:

“I plan to play as many tournaments as my work schedule will allow,” Myke said.  “I hope to be at the State Closed in Winter Park in April.”

Good luck, Myke!  And congratulations on a terrific beginning to the 2006 season!
