April VOM: Lee County CTA Program Director Mike Welter

March 31, 2006 09:23 AM

Mike Welter of Cape Coral has served as the Lee County Community Tennis Association (CTA) program director for more than a year now.  Nearly 300 youth have signed up for the 2006 Spring Ralleyball league, and Mike is a big reason for this extraordinary number of participants!  Hence, USTA Florida honors Mike as the April Volunteer of the Month!

The Lee County CTA in partnership with the Lee County Parks and Recreation Department created and now maintain the local Ralleyball program.  Without them, USTA Florida Community Coordinator Susie Bessire says the program would not exist.

“Mike has been in charge of the Ralleyball program for the past year and the numbers of children participating has grown in leaps and bounds,” Susie said.

In partnership with Wilson, USTA Florida provides a free Wilson racquet to each child who joins the USTA, and Mike incorporates the cost of USTA membership into program fees.

“Thanks to Mike, Wilson representative Bob Pfaender and USTA Florida’s Andy McFarland, there are now 370 new junior USTA members with brand new Wilson racquets playing tennis in Lee County!” Susie said.

In addition to heading the Ralleyball programs, Mike also oversees the Lee County CTA tennis instructors.  Susie raves about Mike’s involvement in the community.  She said he donates many hours to charity events and additional USTA Florida workshops and programs.

“I spent almost 31years in the US Marine Corps, and it is nice to be able to give back to the community,” Mike said.  “We have a strong youth beginner program, wheelchair program and special needs tennis program.  I feel good about what the CTA provides to our community.”

Mike, also known as “Colonel,” is supported and loved by his wife Diane, three daughters and son.

Thank you, Mike, for helping us in our mission to promote and develop tennis in Florida!
