Through its Diversity efforts, USTA Florida for the second year participated in the largest party in Miami, and perhaps one of the biggest Latin festivals in the world - Calle Ocho - on March 12.  According to the Miami Herald, which entitled Calle Ocho, the Showcase of Diversity, this 27th annual festival’s appeal was broader than ever.

Calle Ocho (translation:8th Street) began in 1978 as an open house, inviting everyone to attend and celebrate the Latin culture.  It has now grown to 23 blocks, (between 27th and 4th Avenues), with an average attendance of more than 1,000,000 in one day.

“Run by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, this year’s fete included a golf classic, cooking contest, domino tournament and 8K run.  But the biggest draw by far remained Calle Ocho: the sprawling throbbing carnival in the street” states The Miami Herald.

USTA Florida provided TENNIS of the KIDSZONE …a children's festival within a festival, located between 4th and 8th Avenues.  The east side of Calle Ocho, a total of four city blocks, was dedicated to health, families, fun and excitement.

USTA Florida offered entertaining tennis games, and they supplied a short court for participants to hit balls and win prizes.  Children were given “The Health Benefits of Tennis” brochures and information on local programs in both Spanish and English.  In attendance at the sports festival were ESPN Deportes, Miami Heat, Florida Marlins, Florida Panthers to name a few.

This year, the Kiwanis of Little Havana asked USTA Florida to provide tennis to children at their 2006 summer camp in Miami.  The club also would like USTA Florida to promote the game to adults through Cardio Tennis clinics that will be offered at the 2007 fete, the week-long event prior to the Calle Ocho celebration.
