June Tribute to Tallahassee Tennis Coach Paul Bevan-Thomas

June 5, 2006 10:19 AM

Paul Bevan-Thomas of Tallahassee is being honored by USTA Florida as the June Volunteer of the Month!  As a volunteer with the Tallahassee parks and recreation department, Paul has been instrumental in growing tennis throughout Tallahassee.

Paul is the tennis coach for Holy Comforter Episcopal Middle School, and he has been extremely supportive of USTA Florida Community Consultant Kelly Tucker as she strives to provide tennis to public school children throughout USTA Florida’s region 1.

Paul is the former head tennis professional for Tallahassee parks and recreation; he has volunteered with Kelly’s Jr. Team Tennis and First Serve programs, and he has served as a Ralleyball coach and helped with tournaments in the area.

“Paul is so passionate about tennis,” Kelly said.  “He is always asking me, ‘What next?’ ‘What can I do to help?’  He has been very instrumental in making tennis available to as many local children as possible.”

Kelly said Paul meets with her constantly, and she racks his brain to learn tips about how to grow tennis.  Paul initiated and runs an after-school tennis program at Holy Comforter, and the school recently received a USTA grant to continue the program.

“I feel like I can help kids get hooked into tennis by introducing it in a fun way,” Paul said.

Kelly said Paul’s greatest contribution to local tennis is through middle school youth.  With an extremely talented group of more than 30 young players at Holy Comforter, Paul provided competition for the public schools in the area.

“My goal was to simply get public middle school students playing,” Kelly said.  “Paul was willing to bring his kids out so the kids had the opportunity to compete.”

Paul has a wife Carolyn and three children: Andrew, Isabelle and William.  Congratulations, Paul, and THANK YOU for your effort and enthusiasm to grow tennis!
