USTA Florida honors these gentlemen as OVERHEAD SMASHers for September

Aug. 13, 2004: Hurricane Charlie storms through Charlotte County and destroys homes, buildings and everything in its path, including the Punta Gorda Club where Irvin Perry played tennis.

Two years, to-the-day, later – Aug. 13, 2006: Irvin and eight of his team's 12 players were battling it out in Daytona Beach at the USTA League Presented by Chrysler Florida Section Championships.  And they won their division!  The team will now compete for the national title in Tucson at the end of September.

This USTA Florida 3.0 Men's team of the Punta Gorda Club in Charlotte County, FL, was not always successful.  A quick trip down Memory Lane:

  • April 2004: Irvin takes on team captain role
  • August 2004: Devastation hits; Charlie's wrath destroys the Punta Gorda Club; Irvin's team disperses throughout area clubs
  • January 2005: Irvin and teammate Kevin Bouffard finally scrounge up enough players to form a team, and they enter a three-month local USTA league.  They get beat.  Badly.
  • February 2005-present: Irvin and his teammates practice religiously twice a week at the Punta Gorda Club.  The teammates, ranging in age from 31 to 67, devote their Mondays and Thursdays to tennis.
  • And August 2006: Diligence and practice pays off for the team – they win the section championship, and now they are on their way to Tucson Sept. 29!
  • "In March of 2005, after we lost so badly in practically every match during that three-month league, we decided we wanted to start winning," Irvin said.  "We had a simple goal of winning the local USTA local league; somehow we pulled off a section championship!

"Dedication to the team – that's what makes us unique," he said.  "Everyone gets along, and we all want the best for the team as a whole.  We are excited about Tucson."
