Miami's Cohen captures ITA National Indoor Championship

November 6, 2006 12:45 PM

University of Miami's Audra Cohen captured the singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships.

This event, the second of three national championships for singles and doubles during the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, was hosted by Ohio State at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Miami's Cohen beat Fresno Pacific's Jelena Pandzic 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the women's final.  Cohen, last year's ITA National Player of the Year, captured her second national title - she won the Riviera/ITA All-American two years ago as a freshman at Northwestern.  In the final she jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and was able to hold on.

A junior from Plantation, Fla., Cohen improves to 10-1 this season and 96-10 over the past three seasons.  She is just the third player in the past 11 years to reach all three national finals during her career (she also reached the '05 NCAA final).

Cohen's opponent, Fresno Pacific's Pandzic, is a junior from Split, Croatia.  She is the first player from a non-Division I school to reach the ITA Indoor women's singles final.  She received a wild card into the championships by virtue of winning the ITA National Small College title last month.  Her loss to Cohen snaps Pandzic's 49-match win streak over the past two seasons.
"I was kind of shell shocked in the beginning," Cohen said. "She wasn't missing anything. So I just had to ride the wave, start serving better, get a couple breaks and fight my way back into it."
