Herrington duo honored for volunteerism in December

December 4, 2006 09:25 AM

USTA Florida honors and thanks two generous, modest givers in December.  Dave and Jane Herrington of Fort Myers have been working at Rutenberg Park with the Special Populations/Adaptive Tennis/ Special Olympics program for nine years now.

The Herrington's love and care is made clearly evident through the time and energy they give to the programs; they do not even have a child who participates!

USTA Florida community coordinator Susie Bessire has had the opportunity to see the Herrington's volunteer work first-hand.

"The program instructors have changed over the years," Bessire said.  "The Herringtons have remained the constant in the program.  They have given silently and generously – their efforts deserve recognition."

One of Jane's students David Johnson enjoys working with Jane.

"She does a good job managing the group," David said.  "She is a good teacher, a good coach and a good friend.  Jane is a very good girl."

David said Jane helps him with his low hits, high hits and his serve.

"We all love Jane," he said.

Dave and Jane have given many hours to the Special Populations/Adaptive Tennis/Special Olympics program: one and a half hours, every week for nine years equals 702 hours!

"They always help out with events if 'their kids' are involved in any way," Bessire said.
