Not only did West Florida sophomore Tammy Kevey and Embry-Riddle junior Mislav Hizak turn in strong performances in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Tennis Championships presented by the USTA in 2006; they both received the James O' Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Awards presented by Rolex Watch USA!

The James O' Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award goes to players who display outstanding sportsmanship and exemplify the spirit of college tennis during the course of the ITA National Small College Championships.

The award is given in memory of Jim Sargent, former Media Manager for Rolex Watch USA, who was involved in a fatal car accident in 2000. He was a great friend of college tennis, an ITA All American who competed with outstanding success and sportsmanship at Lynchburg College, and afterwards continued as a special partner to the ITA in his role with Rolex.

In addition to displaying outstanding sportsmanship, Kevey and Hizak both turned in strong performances in the tournament.  Kevey reached the NCAA Division II women's singles final and won the doubles title.  Hizak swept the NAIA singles and doubles titles and became the first men's player to ever repeat as ITA "Super Bowl" singles champion.

Embry-Riddle's Coach David Paschal has coached Hizak for two years; he said Hizak comes to practice every day wanting and asking how he can get better.

"By far and away, when your best player is also your hardest worker, it is a privilege to coach someone like that," Paschal said.  "He takes every practice, conditioning, weight lifting session and match seriously.  He makes those around him better by leading with his outstanding level of effort."

Paschal added that Hizak is also an excellent student with a 3.9 cumulative GPA.

"He is a player that comes around only once or twice in a coach's career," Paschal said.  "I feel very fortunate to be able to share these college years with him."

Congratulations Tammy and Mislav.  USTA Florida honors
you and your achievements this month!
