Gibson Guitar Champions Cup

February 6, 2007 04:37 PM

The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced it will host the Gibson Guitar Champions Cup beginning this summer in Newport featuring Hall of Famers and former world No. 1 champions Jim Courier, John McEnroe and Mats Wilander.  The tournament will be played on the Hall’s legendary grass courts August 22-26, 2007.  The announcement was made by Chris Clouser, Chairman of the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Executive Committee.

The three Hall of Famers will be joined by five other tennis champions in the five-day singles round-robin competition, one of six tournaments in the 2007 Outback Champion Series.  Courier, McEnroe and Wilander’s legendary careers alone account for 133 singles titles, 18 Grand Slam singles championships, and holding down the World No. 1 ranking for 248 weeks. The other five Champions players to be announced will meet the Series’ criteria of either having held a top 5 singles ranking, been a Grand Slam singles finalist or a singles player on a Championship Davis Cup team during their ATP tour playing careers.

“We believe there’s no better place in the world to hold this tournament than here at the Hall where we honor the legends of tennis everyday,” said Mark L. Stenning, CEO, of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.  “We have hosted tournaments with tennis greats such as these over the years and now we join another legend, Gibson Guitar, in providing our fans with a fantastic event.”

Jim Courier, a new Hall of Fame Board Member and a founding Partner of InsideOut Sports who produces the Outback Champion Series, was in Newport for the announcement.  “I can’t tell you how much it means to us to have both the Hall of Fame and Gibson Guitar as a major part of our Series. This is the only grass court Champions tournament worldwide” said Courier.  “Not only will be it be a treat for the fans, but I know the players are thrilled to get the chance to play at such a historic venue and one that is so important to the sport of tennis.“

“A great tradition, exciting entertainment and an enthusiastic crowd – tennis and music have very much in common,” said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar. “We have long been active in every aspect of entertainment throughout the world including tennis and we look forward to a very successful first year of the Gibson Guitar Champions Cup at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.”
