Don Zirpoli - April Volunteer of the Month

April 2, 2007 11:02 AM

This month’s Volunteer of the Month works hard, loves tennis, and happens to be a computer wiz.  Donald Zirpoli has helped grow tennis in Florida for the past 23 years and has been involved with everything from USTA officiating and training ball kids, to serving on the Resource Council for USTA Florida and assisting with the organization’s membership database.  Don truly is a jack of all trades.

Don started playing tennis as a teenager and went on to play NCAA Division III tennis at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ.  His work ethic and team-oriented attitude earned him respect as he was team captain for two years.  After college, Don joined the U.S. Air Force and went on to serve his country for 20 years until he retired as Lt. Col. in 1988.

Don soon returned to his roots in tennis when he and his family moved to Niceville, Fla.  He and his wife, Jo-Ann, began volunteering locally at tennis tournaments in Region 1.  For two years, the duo was in charge of training ball kids for a local tournament that tennis greats Cliff Drysdale and Ken Rosewall participated in.  Shortly after, Don and his wife became certified USTA officials.

Don officiated for junior, collegiate, satellite, challenger, professional, and league events for both USTA Florida and USTA Southern sections.  He traveled and dedicated his time as an official for 10 years, meeting talented players and others associated with the USTA family.  He has volunteered at Membership Appreciation Day during the US Open since 2002, and he currently designs and refines reports for USTA Florida’s database.  His knowledge of computers helps the organization provide timely, meaningful and accurate information to Regional Directors, Community Coordinators and County Reps to use out in the field.

“Working with computers is a hobby and finding ways to make tasks more efficient and useful for others is important,” he said.  “Having played tennis since I was a teenager, it is rewarding to give something back to the game I enjoy so much.”

Jo-Ann now serves on the USTA Board of Directors.  “Tennis has always been important to our family,” she said. “Don encourages and supports me and our children when we are playing or volunteering and gets involved himself.  I appreciate all that Don has done and continues to do for tennis.”

Doug Booth, Executive Director of USTA Florida added, “Don is one of those volunteers that does a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes that really impacts our ability to grow tennis in Florida.”

Thank you, Don, for being a great volunteer and dedicating your time to help grow this great game.  USTA Florida salutes you!
