USTA Celebrates 10 Years of May National Tennis Month

May 3, 2007 02:25 PM
The USTA announced that in celebration of National Tennis Month it has launched a new website along with hosting over 115 “Tennis Block Parties” – a nationwide series of tennis festivals to increase tennis participation in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.  Tennis stars James Blake, Mary Joe Fernandez, Zina Garrison, Vania King and Luke Jensen will help promote the community tennis initiative of May being “Tennis Month” with web-chats and appearances at “Tennis Block Parties.”  Individuals will be able to enjoy Tennis Month via a new website www.tennismonth.com

Fans not only will be able to see when a block party will take place in their area but will also have the opportunity to read a different feature story each day in a section called “31 Days, 31 Stories.”  The stories will be from everyday players, to current and former pros about what tennis means to them.  The website will also feature tips about playing the game, health benefits and how to find a partner.

To kick off Tennis Month and the new website, tennis superstar James Blake participated in a web-chat 5:00 PM EST Wednesday, May 2 at www.tennismonth.com.  The USTA will feature past and present athletes in web-chats throughout May.

Hosted at public parks facilities, “Tennis Block Parties” will feature tennis instruction by skilled teaching professionals, accomplished touring pros and special guests.  The “Tennis Block Parties” will also include interactive games and attractions, offering the opportunity to learn and enjoy the benefits of the game.  The events are free to the public, and will be for people of all ages and abilities, from lifetime players to those who have never picked up a racquet.  Events will include:

• Tennis 101 – Designed with the new player in mind, Tennis 101 provides a quick way to start rallying with a partner.
• Beat the Pros – Teaching pros and top level players take on all comers in an abbreviated tennis match.
• Champions of the Court – Competitors can strut their stuff and remain on the court until defeated by challengers in abbreviated tennis matches.
• Wipe Out – A two-team event where, with every win, a team adds players until the losing team is “wiped out.”

" Just three years ago we started with fifteen block parties and to now have more than 115 we could not be more excited about how these events have taken off," said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA.  "The internet is playing a major role in people’s every day lives, launching Tennismonth.com provides us another avenue to connect with people and help them get in the game.”
