USTA Florida’s March VOM is rarely caught without a smile on her face.  Debbie MacDonald of Daytona Beach has the patience of a Saint; so much in fact, that USTA Florida has nicknamed her “Saint Deb”.  Her patience, positive attitude and Southern charm are attributed to her experiences as a school teacher in Georgia for 32 years and to her involvement as a USTA League Tennis team captain for almost 20 years.

“I love to volunteer in tennis because I love children and tennis and I want everybody to enjoy the sport as much as I do,” said Debbie.

Moving from Georgia in May 2006, Debbie is now retired and dedicates her time to all things volunteer-oriented.

“I love being a team captain because it is volunteer work,” said Debbie.  “I like talking people into volunteering because it helps your community.”

Debbie has volunteered for the USTA Southern Section and USTA Florida Section for a combined 16 years in everything from assisting with Recreational Coach Workshops, demonstrating QuickStart Tennis, helping in PE in-service trainings, working USTA membership booths, entering scores and handling hospitality for numerous USTA League events (most recently, the BMW Combo Doubles Section Championships), organizing and forming USTA League Tennis teams, volunteering at junior, national and USTA sanctioned tournaments, and currently, captaining three women’s teams (3.0, 3.5 and mixed) from Daytona Beach.  Last year, Debbie’s 3.0 senior women's team advanced to sectionals for the first time!

If that isn’t enough, Debbie added, “Wherever they [USTA Florida] need me, I just try to be on call.”  With a statement like that, how could we not love her!

Debbie says she likes getting “folks” involved in tennis because of the social and physical benefits - and because she thinks players “just have a good time”.

In only a few years since moving from Georgia, Debbie has jumped feet first into volunteering for the USTA Florida Section, and we know she will always be one of the first people to lend a hand when needed.  So with that, we say, “Thank you ‘Saint Deb’ for loving the game of tennis and giving back to your community each and every day.”

More about Debbie:

My earliest tennis memory was…taking lessons from my future husband in college

If I could play tennis with three people, they would be…Jimmy Connors (he's a lefty, like me), Stan Smith (what a nice guy), and John Lloyd (a great player)

When I am not playing tennis I am…walking on the beach, playing with my grand daughters, and eating the fish that my dad catches

Best ever tennis memory…meeting Jimmy Connors!
