Kitty Wilmoth of Jacksonville is recognized as USTA Florida’s June Volunteer of the Month because she is actively involved in tennis and committed to what she can do to help the sport.  Acting as USTA Florida Duval County Rep, Kitty has completed a facilities inventory for all the parks and country clubs in the area and is working on the inventory for schools and residential courts.

As explained by Doug Booth, USTA Florida executive director, “It is very important we assess how many courts a county has and what shape they are in to help us determine if there is a need to advocate for more community tennis courts in that area.”

Thanks to Kitty’s continued research and efforts in Jacksonville, she is well respected by USTA Florida staff, tennis players and pros in the tennis community.

Kitty is involved with the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation (MWKF), First Coast Tennis Association and North Florida Tennis Pros Association.  She is the recorder for the MWKF and North Florida Tennis Pros Association, attending meetings and involving herself with a variety of tennis organizations.  She is also a coordinator of local tennis leagues in Jacksonville that participated in a “Stock the Shelves” campaign for the new MWKF education center.

Terri Florio, USTA Florida region 2 regional representative and executive director of the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, said, “Kitty is always one of those people that is active and volunteers when it comes to tennis.”

Celia Rehm, USTA Florida president added, “Kitty is very efficient, professional, reliable and eager to learn.  As a county rep, if she tells you she will do something, she will.”

In her second year as a USTA Florida volunteer, Kitty has helped the organization tremendously.  The Jacksonville tennis community is lucky to have her on their side and USTA Florida appreciates her hard work and dedication to the lifetime sport of tennis!

More about Kitty:

My earliest tennis memory was…  Playing tennis with my brother using wooden racquets and the grass median of the court we lived on as a net.  When we were lucky, my mom would take us up to the park to use a real court.

If I could play tennis with three people, they would be…  MaliVai Washington (awesome role model), Lindsay Davenport (such a lady) and Puschel Sorrensen (my first partner).

When I am not playing tennis I am… Recording minutes for MWKF board, NFPTA board, running FCTA League and Open League, advocating tennis in Duval, hunting (alligator, hog and deer), shooting clays and cooking

Best ever tennis memory…  The first time I played in a league match.  I felt such power and excitement just unsheathing my weapon from its case.  Then I saw the bag tag on one of our opponent’s bags that read ‘Atlanta City Champs C Division’.  My bubble burst.  We had worked so hard to put together this small inexperienced virgin team and we were all so nervous.  Puschel and I lost 6-1 6-0 but we didn't care, we remembered how to keep score, where to stand on the court and we WON A GAME.  Life was great!

I like to volunteer in tennis because…  Tennis opened my life up to the ME part, not Mom, not Wife, not daughter but KITTY and I like being able to see the joy it brings to others.
