Mark and Deb Anderson – October VOM

October 3, 2008 01:14 PM
Mark and Deb Anderson of Clermont have earned the shared title of October Volunteer of the Month because everything they do, they do together.  The inseparable pair have been volunteering with USTA Florida for the past three years, teaming together to promote the game of tennis in Lake County.  The duo has encouraged local communities to support the game and they have advocated endlessly to county and city officials about the need for more tennis courts in the area.  Their efforts have influenced the City Council of Clermont to consider adding more tennis courts to Lake Felter Park, where they taught 40 kids, age 5 to 12 years old, QuickStart Tennis this summer, and to include tennis courts in a proposed $1.4 million sport’s park to begin construction in the next few years.

“We are on the edge of actually having a facility where we have enough courts together to support tennis programming and leagues,” Deb said.  “For the first time ever, we were allowed to reserve courts for tennis programming.”

This is the first time the city has done anything with the USTA, thanks in part to Mark and Deb.

“All that has been mentioned wouldn't have even been possible without the support, direction and encouragement of our steering committee,” she said.  “This group continues to grow and create and will become more visible throughout Lake County in the years to come.”

Mark and Deb are in discussion now with the school district to train PE teachers and add the QuickStart Tennis format after school in two local elementary schools.  In addition to advocating new tennis courts, teaching children tennis and playing tennis (the pair play USTA League Tennis together), the pair serves as USTA Florida Senior Local League Coordinators.  This fall will begin their sixth season of coordinating senior leagues, including combo, NTRP and mixed doubles, and they anticipate starting the first adult league in Clermont.

“Whether or not it happens, we don’t know, but we are trying!” Deb said.  If so, the league will take place at Palatlakaha Park, which has three courts to foster the inaugural program.

Getting things done like Mark and Deb means they have it right.  The two complement each other flawlessly, making for a dynamic tennis power for USTA Florida.

“Deb connects with city, the community and county to network and is the telemarketer of this family,” Mark said.

Deb added, “Mark plans and I call.”

The combination works!
