Florida Players Shine at ITF Seniors

May 14, 2009 07:00 AM

Three U.S. teams captured world titles, and two other U.S. teams medaled in age group divisions at the ITF Senior World Team Championships in Mallorca, Spain, in May.

U.S. women's teams brought home the Margaret Court Cup (Women's 45), defeating the Czech Republic, and Maureen Connolly Cup (Women's 55), defeating Spain. The U.S. men won their only team title in the Fred Perry Cup (Men's 50), beating Germany 2-0 with Mike Fedderly and Peter Markes doing the damage in singles.

The three-time defending champ U.S.'s Maria Esther Bueno Cup (Women's 50) team was upset in the final by Great Britain, with Anthea Stewart of Great Britain beating Susan Wright, and Britain's Chris French topping Diane Fishburne in singles. Carolyn Nichols (Fort Lauderdale) was the captain of the Maria Esther Bueno Cup team, and along with partner Marianne Robertson went 5-0 in doubles for the week.

The U.S.'s Young Cup (Women's 40) captured the bronze medal, beating Spain 2-1. Vesna McKenna (Hollywood) was the No. 1 singles player, winning 7-6, 7-6 against South Africa in the round robin portion of the event to lift the team into the semifinals. McKenna, who grew up in Argentina and speaks fluent Spanish, Croatian and German in addition to English, proved an able teammate on and off the court in Mallorca.

Florida players Mary Dailey (Delray Beach), Joanne Russell (Naples), and Mary Ginnard (Ft. Lauderdale) were members of winning Cup teams. Russell and Ginnard were members of the Maureen Connolly Cup team. Russell was 5-0 in singles for the week, and Ginnard/Martha Downing were 4-0 for the week in doubles. Dailey was part of the Young Cup bronze medal finishers.

In individual play, Florida players Russell, Dailey, and Adams captured world titles.

Russell, unseeded in the Women's 55 division, did not drop a set in six matches en route to the title, beating Arizona's Sherri Bronson 6-2, 6-1 in the final. Russell is a former NCAA doubles champion and won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1977, ranking at a high of No. 11 on the WTA Tour Rankings.

Adams (also a singles semifinalist) teamed with Dan Waldman to win the Men's 50 doubles title, beating fellow Americans and top seeds Mike Fedderly and Val Wilder in the final.

Dailey won the Women's 45 doubles with Fran Chandler of Tennessee, defeating defending world champions Myke Loomis/Mariana Hollman 7-6, 6-2.

"I felt good, but also felt a little tight playing such good friends," blogged Loomis of Santa Rosa Beach, located on the Florida panhandle. "No matter what we did, they had an answer...Needless to say I was very disappointed, but because I thought we played well and still lost, the hurt is not so deep. They were the better team and won. I know the joy and excitement they felt all too well and I was happy for their success. Mary and Fran are two of the genuinely nicest people and players I know. It was their time to shine. Mary has won a World Championship before in doubles, but this was Fran's first."
