McEnroe, King Volley on Hudson for Tennis Month

May 7, 2009 07:00 AM
When you see John McEnroe and Billie Jean King playing tennis on a barge floating on the Hudson River with the New York City skyline in the background, you know it's time to celebrate tennis -- in this case the month of May, which is National Tennis Month.

The 12th-year celebration of National Tennis Month saw the two legends exchanging groundstrokes and volleys to bring attention to the fastest-growing of any sport in the U.S.

"National Tennis Month is a perfect way to get focus on our game," King said. "It gets the beginners started and serves as a friendly reminder to get your racquet and head back to the tennis court."

"New York City is where I'm from, so we're in a setting that is second-to-none to jump start National Tennis Month," McEnroe said. "For me, it's about getting even more kids playing our sport."

Tennis Block Parties across Florida and the U.S. will be featuring QuickStart Tennis, the new format for children or adult beginners that features foam or decompressed balls, and smaller racquets and court dimensions for kids.

National Tennis Month is the annual celebration of the outdoor tennis season and part of an industry-wide initiative to increase tennis participation in the United States. Recent data from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association shows that tennis is the fastest-growing traditional sport in the country, with participation increasing 43% since 2000 and 9.6% in the last year alone. Throughout the month, the USTA will conduct events nationwide to promote tennis, celebrate its growth and increase participation in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
