Riddell, Russ Sweep at USTA Forest Hills National Grass Courts

Florida players reached finals in four of the six active age divisions, and won four titles overall on July 20-26, 2009, at the USTA National Women's 30,40,50,60,70,80&90 Grass Court Championships held at the former site of the US Open, the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York.

Trish Riddell of Maitland swept the singles and doubles titles in the Women's 30 division, while Louise Russ of Boca Raton did likewise in the Women's 80 division.

The No. 2-seeded Riddell defeated No. 3-seeded Jenny Lee of San Diego, Calif., 6-3, 6-0 in the singles final, and in the doubles went undefeated in round robin play with partner Shareen Lai of Morrisville, Penn.

The top-seeded Russ topped No. 3 Louise Owen of Evansville, Ind., 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final, and in doubles won the championship with partner Doris Stephens of San Clemente, Calif.

Sarasota's Doris Lutz finished fourth in the Women's 80 singles after losing a three-setter in the 3rd/4th place playoff. Florida was well represented in the Women's 80s singles with additional participants Nancy Stout of Sarasota and Naples' Joan Brisbin. Stout captured third place in doubles after the playoff with partner Catherine Hall of Newport Beach, Calif.

In the Women's 40 final, top-seeded Vesna McKenna of Hollywood finished runner-up to No. 2 seed Julie Cass of Austin, Tex., 6-3, 6-4. Naples' Joanne Russell and her partner, Amy Alcini of Malibu, Calif., lost in the Women's 40 doubles final. Delray Beach's Mary Dailey took third place with partner Julie Cass of Austin, Tex., after winning the 3rd/4th place playoff.

In the Women's 60 final, No. 3 seed Heide Orth of Palm Coast finished runner-up to top-seeded Martha Downing of Shingle Springs, Calif., 6-3, 6-1. No. 5 seed Betty Wachob of Panama City finished 4th after falling in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

Orth was also denied in the doubles final, finishing runner-up with partner Molly Hahn of Belmont, Mass.

No singles or doubles events were held in the Women's 90 division.
