Augustin of Delray Beach Wins Arthur Ashe Essay Contest

August 17, 2009 04:58 PM
Laura Augustin of Delray Beach, Fla., was announced this week as one of 10 national winners in the 2009 USTA Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. Agustin, the winner in the girls' 10-and-under category, is a participant in the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network, the Delray Beach Tennis Patrons, a youth-serving organization that provides tennis and education to develop the character of young people.

Augustin and a parent or guardian receives a trip to New York and the 2009 US Open, where they will be guests at the 2009 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day presented by Hess on Aug. 29, 2009.

Contest participants were asked to write an essay on the meaning of the Arthur Ashe quote, "From what we get, we make a living; what we give, however, makes a life."

Arthur Ashe broke barriers both on and off the court as a social activist and three-time Grand Slam champion, the first African American male to win a Grand Slam tournament. He took on issues such as racial prejudice, AIDS, apartheid, and youth education, and one of his many legacies includes the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network of youth serving organizations that provides tennis and education for all.

Founded in 1969 by Ashe, Charlie Pasarell, and Sheridan Snyder, the NJTL has more than 520 registered chapters/programs throughout the nation and 200,000 participants aged 6?18. NJTL providers share similar values, ideals, and goals by:

* reaching out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play tennis;
* instilling in youngsters the values of leadership and academic excellence; and
* giving all kids (regardless of income, race, gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport.

NJTLs are unique because they offer a variety of on-court programming and educational and life-skill components designed to enhance a player's overall development. The NJTL is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a team-oriented and safe environment. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant.

Florida's MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, a NJTL provider in Jacksonville, was last year's national NJTL of the Year. For a listing of Florida NJTLs, or to learn more about the program, click here.
