Jake Albo of Plantation, Fla., won the 2009 USTA Boy's 14's Nationals Championships on Sunday in San Antonio, Tex., defeating No. 4 seed Greg Garcia of Poway, Calif., 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Albo, the No. 6 seed, had only dropped one other set the entire tournament through seven rounds, winning 7-6 in the third in the round of 16.

"My fitness level and serve and forehand were working well today," Albo told the San Antonio Express-News after beating the No. 2 seed 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. "I train in Florida, and you have to have good fitness because of the heat. I'll try to get him (Garcia) tired (in the final)."

Albo needed a strategy turn-around after he was beaten badly in the first set of the final, but ground out the final two sets. Albo was also a semifinalist last month at the USTA Clay Courts in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Garcia beat his doubles partner Drew Dawson in the Saturday semifinals. Garcia and Dawson won the doubles title on Friday.

In June Albo was top seeded at the USTA Florida Jr. State Closed in the Boys 14s, sweeping to the title.

Albo attributed a year of homeschooling to his game making a leap forward. He currently trains out of the Bill Clark Academy in Cooper City.
