Flex League Tennis Kick-off Party at Boone Park in Jacksonville

August 17, 2009 04:36 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Aug. 14, 2009 -- The Boone Park Tennis Complex in Jacksonville will host a free kick-off party on Thursday, Sept. 3 from 6-8 p.m. to celebrate the introduction of USTA Florida Flex Leagues to the Greater Jacksonville area.

The USTA Flex League is a tennis league featuring singles, doubles, or mixed doubles play, where individuals can set their own flexible schedule with opponents during a 4-6 week season, rather than having to play at a certain time or place each week.

"The fall leg of the league will start in September and end in November, and we are offering singles, doubles, mixed doubles and senior doubles," says USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator Amanda Becker, who coordinates the First Coast region (Duval, Nassau, St. Johns and Clay counties). "There are so many young professionals in the area that used to play in high school, or as a child, but don't play anymore because either they don't have anyone to play with, they don't know where to play, or it's too expensive. Flex Leagues tennis is going to give these people an opportunity to reconnect with the sport and meet new friends, whether they're beginning or advanced players."

Registration closes for the fall league on Sept. 11, with matches starting Sept. 21 and ending Nov. 21.

USTA Florida is partnering with Jacksonville Scene (www.JacksonvilleScene.com) for the launch of Flex Leagues. Jacksonville Scene is the city's "original and premier recreational sport and social organization for adults," providing numerous sports leagues and social event opportunities throughout the year.

The USTA Florida Flex League kick-off party is free and open to the public. Bring a racquet as there will be tennis games and drills, a doubles round robin, and open play will be featured on the Boone Park public clay courts. USTA Florida will provide food, beverages and prizes/giveaways.

"The great thing about Flex Leagues is you only need one court," Becker says. "It's not like other leagues where you need 3-5 courts. As long as you have one empty court you can play your match."

Three Flex League seasons will be offered annually, in the fall, winter and late spring. Prizes will be awarded to league champions at the various flights (NTRP rating 2.5 to 5.0), and playoffs for winners of the Jacksonville "East" and "West" flights to determine a City of Jacksonville champion for each flight level. In addition, all "East" Jacksonville Flex League participants will receive a one-week free trial at the 360 FIT fitness facility in Mandarin.

Boone Park is located at 3730 Park St. on the west side of Jacksonville.
