Seven Florida Players Named to Super Senior Cup Tennis Teams

Seven tennis players from Florida are among those named to represent the U.S. on Nov. 2-7, 2009, at the Super Senior International World Team Competition in Perth, Austalia.

Named by the USTA to represent the U.S. from Florida will be Carol Clay, Ft. Lauderdale; Donna Fales, Coral Gables; Boots Van Nostrand, Vero Beach;  Rudy Hernando, Ft. Lauderdale; Fred Farzanegan, Tampa; King Van Nostrand, Vero Beach; and Clem Hopp, Sarasota.

These teams are the senior equivalent of Davis or Fed Cup. This year they will be played on artificial and natural grass. The U.S. is the defending champion of the Queens Cup for women 75 and over, and the Bitsy Grant Cup for men 75 and over. 

Clay will be the playing captain for the Alice Marble Cup for women 60 and over. They will be playing on artificial grass at the Robertson Park Tennis Center in Perth. Clay is playing on her second Marble Cup team. She is having her best ever year in senior tennis, reaching the final two Grandes Dames tournaments this year and her first national singles final in April, falling in three sets to her Marble Cup teammate, Brenda Carter of Charleston at the clay courts. Her other teammates are Martha Downing, Shingle Springs, Calif.; and Kathy Bennett, Rancho Mirage, Calif. The U.S. placed second in the Marble Cup in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey.

Fales will be the playing captain for the Kitty Godfree Cup for women 65 and over. This team will be playing on natural grass in Australia. She won the Checket Cup in February and placed third at the grass courts in July in singles and doubles. Her teammates will be Suella Steel, La Jolla, Calif.; Lee Delfausse, Waitsfield, Vt.; and Cathie Anderson, Del Mar, Calif. The U.S. placed second in the Godfree Cup in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey.

Van Nostrand will captain the Queens Cup for women 75 and over. She will join her husband, King, in Perth. She has had an excellent year in 2009, winning Checket Cup and the national clay courts, and reaching the final of the national indoors. She will be joined in Perth by her teammates, Mary Boswell, Damascus, Md.; Margaret Canby, San Antonio, Tex.; and Lee Burling, Lake Oswego, NY. The U.S. Queens Cup team won their Cup in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey.

Farzanegan will captain the Crawford Cup for men 70 and over. The USA Crawford Cup team will be playing on natural grass in Perth. Farzanegan had a stellar 2008, winning the indoor, clay and hardcourt nationals. He also won the world doubles title with King Van Nostrand. Hernando is in his first year of the 70s and reached the final of the National Indoors and Hard Courts this year. They will be joined by Robert Quall, Merced, Calif.; and Bob Duesler, Newport Beach, Calif. The U.S. Crawford Cup team placed second in 2008 in Turkey.

Van Nostrand has been named to the Bitsy Grant Cup team for men 75 and over. He is the current world champion in 70 singles and doubles. He also reached the final of the 70 grass courts in 2008. He went undefeated at No. 2 singles on the 2008 Crawford Cup team. The Grant Cup team will be playing on natural grass in Perth. He will be joined by Neil Hurlbut, Tucson, Ariz.; John Powless, Madison, Wis.; and Richard Doss, Rancho Mirage, Calif. The U.S. Grant Cup team won their Cup in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey.

Hopp has been named to the Gardnar Mulloy Cup team for the second straight year. He ended 2008 ranked No. 1 in the world and has retained that ranking in 2009. He won the 2009 Hard Court Championships and the European Championships. The Mulloy Cup team will be playing on natural grass. He will be joined by Graydon Nichols, Hanford, Calif.; Tony Franco, Briarcliff Manor, NY; and Jason Morton, Sun Lakes, Ariz. The U.S. finished second in the Mulloy Cup competition in 2008.
