USTA Florida Adult League North Dade Kick-off at Williams Island

September 27, 2009 07:00 PM

AVENTURA, FL -- USTA Florida celebrated the expansion of its adult leagues program in North Dade with a morning and evening kick-off party on Sept. 9, 2009 at Williams Island Club in Aventura. Though the day began and ended with thunderstorms, new and existing league tennis players could not be deterred from the festivities which included complimentary food and beverage, prizes, a fashion show, and of course, time on the tennis court.

“We really meant it when we said ‘rain or shine,’” said a laughing Cathy Nordlund, USTA Florida tennis program coordinator, as attendees began filing into the upper deck of the luxurious tennis facility. Nordlund, having served the Miami area for over five years, saw the opportunity and demand for league tennis in North Dade and wanted the first ever kick-off to be “about giving the players a happy experience. So whether it’s the food, the entertainment, or during the league season -- we want them to have the best possible experience here.”

The experience began with a goody bag for each guest and a full-spread buffet, courtesy of Williams Island. As guests ate from a wide array of breakfast pastries or hors d’oeuvres, Nordlund and Cory Browarnik (USTA local league coordinator) provided information about the league season. USTA Florida staff from the section office also attended to provide support and answer questions.

As thoughts began to shift from food to tennis, Aventura Tennis introduced the latest trends in attire, accessories and equipment with an exclusive fashion show.  A lucky raffle winner was awarded a $30 gift certificate from Le Chocolatier. The remainder of the event was dedicated to enjoying the lush tennis courts with a round of games and drills hosted by local pros. Players were awarded prizes such as a can of tennis balls (Prince), free gym memberships (Olympia Gym) or USTA Florida gear.

As smiling guests headed out, That Cool Café served up fresh and flavorful low-fat treats. “It was great to meet and interact with the players today as well as see how much they enjoy the game,” said Browarnik, sipping her chocolate smoothie. “I’m very excited for the upcoming season!”
