USTA Jr. Team Tennis Fall Kick-off Bash at Arthur Snyder in North Miami

NORTH MIAMI, FL -- As children all over the state jump-started their school year, USTA Jr. Team Tennis (JTT) also got off to a running start with a celebratory day of fun and games on Sept. 13, 2009, at the Arthur Snyder Tennis Center in North Dade.

With the relentless storm-filled clouds finally at bay, the afternoon was ideal for a Sunday family outing filled with good food, laughter and tennis.

“Tennis is not just a lifetime sport; it’s also a team sport,” said USTA Tennis Program Coordinator Cathy Nordlund, looking out over the sun-kissed courts. “JTT allows these kids to learn the game and experience team camaraderie and accomplishment.”

Children of all ages and skill levels marched onto the courts to duke it out for the title of “fastest serve” and took their best aim in “Hit for Prizes.” Many boisterous cries of victory and fist pumps were heard and seen throughout the afternoon, and even those unlucky few who hadn’t yet hit the mark remained cheerfully determined to find their target.

“The kids and parents really enjoyed it,” said a smiling Desi Pierre, USTA local league coordinator. “For parents it’s fulfilling to see their child grow in terms of skill and maturity -- and kids, of course, they are motivated by their achievements and their team.”

As the young and enthused group refueled from their afternoon workout with fresh-baked pizza and sweet potato puffs, Nordlund sent six lucky raffle winners home with a brand new racquet or backpack, courtesy of Prince.

USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a national youth tennis league played in all 50 states.  It isn't about the individual, it's about the kids getting together to play matches against other teams.  It’s a fun environment for kids where they learn that succeeding is really more about how you play the game, win or lose.
