Beardsley Named USTA Florida September Volunteer of the Month

September 17, 2009 07:00 PM
You can glean all you need to know about September USTA Florida Volunteer of the Month Debbie Beardsley's passion by reaching her telephone answering message.
"Hi this is Debbie -- I'm either on the phone, on the tennis court, or watching the Tennis Channel..."

A force for recreational tennis on and off the court in the Odessa region of Tampa, Beardsley aided USTA Florida Local League Coordinator Sharon Belmudez in the initial set-up and founding of the Hillsborough County Tennis Association, an official USTA Florida Community Tennis Association, and brings the community together by helping organize the year-end Captains Celebration. She also participates in four (4) tennis leagues.

"My husband got me started playing tennis, he has always played tennis," said Beardsley, who began as a 3.0 player and now has a 4.0 rating. "I've been playing tennis about 13 years."

In those 13 years Beardsley has developed a reputation as a matchmaker, helping players find leagues to become involved in, or simply an available doubles partner.

"Giving back is a feel-good situation," she says. "Helping others find teams to join, and partnerships makes me feel like I'm helped out in some small way. The tennis community is very small in Odessa."

In March 2009, while at
the Sony Ericsson tennis tournament in Miami/Key Biscayne,
at our hotel, Fernando Verdasco was sitting in his Aston
Martin in vallee parking, and he was so kind to get out of
his car to take a picture with me and my husband.

Her volunteering has also extended to professional tennis, helping out with player lodging at local minor-league pro events featuring competitors such as Florida's own Angela Haynes.

"My husband and I took care of living arrangements for Angela Haynes and her father last month during the USTA Pro Circuit tournament at Cheval," Beardley says. "We paid for their meals and arranged for them to stay at my brother-in-law's townhouse where they could have privacy. We drove them back and forth to Cheval during the tournament too."

Aside from her own league play and victories, Beardley cherishes rooting on friends and family. One of her greatest tennis memories is traveling to the USTA 3.5 Men's Nationals in 2002, witnessing her husband's team going undefeated and winning the national championship.

Volunteering has become a conduit to the community for three-year USTA Florida local volunteer.

"I like to volunteer in tennis because I enjoy being connected to tennis in any way possible!"

Just leave a message at the beep, and she'll get back to you after she gets off the court.
