Marsha Adams of Tallahassee will take her first-ever trip to the US Open in 2010 as a guest of USTA Florida after being chosen as the 50,000th member of the USTA Florida section. USTA Florida celebrated reaching the landmark 50,000 membership mark in October 2009.

Adams was left speechless when notified via phone by USTA Florida Executive Director Doug Booth (see accompanying video), and after the call still had a hard time believing she had won airfare, lodging, and tickets for herself and a guest to the 2010 US Open.

"I was convinced my doubles partner, Joyce, was playing a trick on me," Adams said. "I really did not believe it was true until I spoke with Trina [Singian, USTA Florida membership & marketing coordinator] a little later. I was still waiting, 24 hours later, for someone to tell me it was just a joke. I still have to pinch myself when I think that I am going to the US Open!"

Adams was a late comer to tennis, picking up the game for the first time at the age of 55, but has since enjoyed the fitness and social benefits of the sport as a USTA Florida league player.

"I put a tennis racquet in my hand for the first time approximately four years ago and became a member of USTA in 2006," Adams said. "I am very pleased at the improvement in my mental, emotional and physical well-being. I have been introduced to wonderful women of all ages that 'just want to have fun.' I have had to learn patience, tolerance and anger management -- mostly at myself. I wish I had taken the opportunity to play tennis many years ago, I absolutely love to play and watch tennis."

Tennis-watching for Adams will go to the next level at the 2010 US Open where she will have the chance to get up close and personal with her favorite players: Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, the Bryan brothers and Roger Federer. She has been a spectator at the local Tallahassee Challenger, which attracts a number of future tour stars such as Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, Donald Young, and Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"The Tallahassee Challenger is the only tennis event I have ever been privileged to attend, although I might add that Tsonga
actually won the first Challenger I attended," said Adams of seeing Tsonga prior to his Australian Open success.

Adams was chosen as the USTA Florida 50,000th member through a random drawing of the entire USTA Florida membership. USTA Florida membership and league participation, both adult and junior, has continued to grow throughout 2009.

"This is a tremendous milestone for our association," Singian said. "Even in tough economic times, Florida tennis continues to flourish. We continually seek new and innovative ways to bring in more players by providing quality programs, leagues and tournaments."
