University of Florida freshman Allie Will in singles and the University of Miami's Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu in doubles captured the championships last weekend at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta.

Will and Mejia/Vallverdu now receive berths into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, held at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn., Nov. 5-8.

The Gator rookie upset Miami's No. 2-seeded and Vallverdu, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the singles semifinals, then beat No. 4-seeded Noemie Scharle of Florida State, ranked No. 24 in the country, 6-4, 6-0.

"Allie did a fabulous job," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "There was one point in the first set of the championship match when she noticed that her style of play really disrupted Noemie and Allie did a great job of being very physical. She limited her
unforced errors, moved the ball around, used both corners and ultimately physically broke her down...To beat Vallverdu in the
semis, in and of itself was a great feat because she's a player who reached the NCAA singles final last year."

Will won six singles matches in four days, improving her collegiate record to 19-2, with 13 wins over nationally-ranked opponents. She became the first Gator to complete the championship run since Jennifer Magley downed Georgia's Shadisha Robinson in 2003.

Mejia/Vallverdu in the doubles final swept through the University of South Florida's Melissa Koning and Irene Rehberger 8-3. With the win, Mejia and Vallverdu stayed perfect on the year together, holding a record of 7-0 in the fall.
