Tallahassee Kick-off for USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis

October 6, 2009 07:00 PM
TALLAHASSEE -- A free USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis kick-off party was hosted by Tallahassee Jr. Team Tennis where 65 boys and girls, ages 8-18, came out to the Florida State University (FSU) Scott Speicher Tennis Center in late September. Mayor John Marks welcomed the group before play began, reminding players that tennis can be a great sport for life in addition to helping with fitness, fun, and even college applications and college admittance.

Jr. Team Tennis players warmed-up with members of the FSU women's and men's teams, and then it was time to play. A court was also reserved for beginning players who needed to work on their strokes.

"I just love playing tennis and it's fun to meet other kids who love tennis as much as I do," said participant Ian Kelly.

When play was finished, FSU men's coaches Nick Crowell and Dwayne Hultquist, as well as FAMU women's coach Nikki Goldtheatre and Killearn Country Club Assistant Pro, Nathalie Portmann, played "Beat the Pro" with all of the participants. Once kids won a point off of the pros, a USTA prize was awarded to the winners.

Finally, 30 pizzas and a "tennis racket and tennis ball cake" were served to all participants. Other area pros participating included Trish Shaw, Killearn Country Club pro, and Corbin Graves, Maclay School tennis coach, who came out to cheer on their students.
