Florida Jr. Team Tennis Fan Cercone Signs with UF

November 11, 2009 06:00 PM
Whether it was USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis or representing Florida on zonal or intersectional teams, Seminole's Alexandra Cercone has always loved playing tennis on a team. That factored into her decision last week when she announced she would join the already-stacked women's line-up at the University of Florida (UF) in 2010 rather than immediately trying her hand on the professional tour.

"I've lived in Florida my whole life, and I'm really proud to represent Florida," Cercone told zootennis.com's Colette Lewis. "I figured I still wanted to be a Florida girl; I don't want that to change."

Cercone was the Tennis Recruiting Network's fourth-ranked prospect from the class of 2010 according to Lewis.

"People had told me once you take your visits you'll know for sure where you want to go, but I had no idea," Cercone recalls. "When I took my visits, honestly, I just got more confused. I took a week to think about it, prioritize everything, figure out what was important to me."

At UF she will join longtime friend and fellow Floridian Lauren Embree who is currently competing for UF as a freshman, as is Allie Will, of Boca Raton, Fla., who also started classes this fall in Gainesville.

"Right now one of my strengths is figuring out my opponent -- people say I'm smart on the court," says Cercone. "I'm hoping when I go to school that I improve my fitness -- endurance, strength -- and to build up my arsenal a little more; more shot selection, being able to make the right decision at the right time. There's nothing specific right now, but I think I'll come across things that need improvement."
