The USTA Florida Adult League Northwest Regional Championships were held in Tallahassee on July 10-12, 2009, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect for the players and fans who came out to support their favorite teams.

Local area USTA Florida winning teams competed against the winning teams from Jacksonville, Emerald Coast, and Pensacola. Most of the divisions used round robin match play to determine the winner that would move on to Sectionals, held in Daytona Beach on August 7-9.

Both the 3.5 women and the 4.5 men from Tallahassee battled to the bitter end, losing on the final day in very close matches. The 3.5 women, captained by Stacy Chick, won 4-1 against Emerald Coast and 3-2 against Jacksonville, only to lose 3-2 to Pensacola in the final match. It came down to the final doubles match which went to a close third-set tiebreaker with Tallahassee losing 11-9.
The 4.5 men, captained by Tim Thompson, won twice against Pensacola, won once against Jacksonville and then lost once against Jacksonville on the final day of play. After team points and individual matches won came up the same for Jacksonville and Tallahassee, the number of sets won each was the factor that determined the ultimate winner. Unfortunately, Tallahassee came short by only one set against Jacksonville.

In other divisions, the 4.0 men, captained by Larry Johnson, came in 2nd place to Pensacola. The 4.0 men won twice against Jacksonville but lost twice to Pensacola. The 4.0 women, captained by Karen Vogter, came in 2nd to Jacksonville who ended up moving on to win 1st place at sectionals in Daytona Beach the following month.

The 2.5 women, captained by Susan Saunders, placed 2nd in their division by beating Jacksonville once and losing twice to Pensacola, who were the ultimate winners in that division.

Two terrific tennis events occurred on the weekend of August 21-23, 2009. The first-ever Tennis Boot Camp for 12 tournament-level senior players was held at Hidden Dunes Beach and Racquet Resort in Destin, and the 64-team compass draw Heads N Tails Mixed Doubles tournament was held at The Club in Gulf Breeze.

The tennis boot camp at Hidden Dunes camp featured visiting pro Phil Landauer of Columbus, Ohio, the recent winner of a Men's 55 "Golden Slam" in doubles with partner Tom Smith; Hidden Dunes Tennis Director, Myke Loomis; and Hidden Dunes Head Pro Renee Broxson. The camp consisted of 11-1/2  hours over three days of intensive drills and play focusing mainly on doubles but including singles tactics.

Entertainment included dinner Friday evening at Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin and Saturday evening burgers and beer on the beach at the Hidden Dunes home of John and Marilyn Pittman.

At the same time, on the hydrocourts at The Club in Gulf Breeze, 64 teams participated in the Heads N Tails compass draw mixed doubles tourney. This tournament marked the first time that an area mixed tourney filled the 64 draw since the 2004 Hurricane Ivan. Previously, all three of the area mixed tourneys had 64 draws with waiting lists. Tournament Director Geoff Watts worked long and hard to fill the draw, and the teams he got were splendid. Club owners Chuck and Penny Emling are from Louisiana, hence the crayfish theme. Players enjoyed at least four matches, special t-shirts, never ending beverages and soft drinks and food galore.

Former University of West Florida All-Americans Geoff Watts (Pensacola)  and Rick Regan (Mobile, Ala.) and their partners, Jackie Kasler (Gulf Breeze) and Adriana Solarova (Mobile) respectively battled in a terrific final with Regan and Solarova winning 2-6,6-2,6-3. A bonus for local fans included getting to see several really good juniors including Kasler, Jennifer Pfeifler, John Nowak and Reece Acree playing against really good opponents. Great job Geoff Watts and all of the tournament and Club staff.
