Flagler College Joins USTA Florida 'Tennis on Campus' with Tennis Club

December 1, 2009 06:00 PM
Flagler College has become the latest addition to the USTA Florida 'Tennis on Campus' family, adding a recreational tennis club for students under the leadership of Flagler Tennis Club President Seth Muse.

"The club currently sees on average 35 students at its Wednesday night sessions," Muse told the Flagler College Gargoyle. "We have seen as many as 50 students in one night."

The tennis club meets regularly on Wednesday nights, and additional tennis nights are often held on Fridays. The sponsor of the club is Flagler Intramural Director Mike Roberson.

"The club is an excellent medium for exercise, fun or even preparation for outside tournaments," Muse said.

Flagler joins 10 other college or university campuses across Florida that host tennis clubs and participate in the USTA Florida 'Tennis on Campus' program, including Eckerd College, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida International University, Florida State University, Rollins College, Stetson University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of Miami, and University of South Florida.

The USTA Tennis On Campus program provides college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a varsity program. Perfect for athletes who have chosen not to make the jump from high school to college varsity, Tennis On Campus offers co-ed team-based play, regional and national championship competition, and helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years.

Currently, the Tennis on Campus program is offered on over 500 college campuses and services over 30,000 students in the U.S.

Two events remain on the 2009-2010 USTA Florida 'Tennis on Campus' schedule prior to the National Championships in Arizona: The University of Miami IBIS Open on Feb. 13-14, 2010 in Miami, and the Florida Campus Championship on Feb. 27-28, 2010, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
