Volusia County's Korey Love has committed to play tennis for Division I Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. "I am in the International Baccalaureate program at Spruce Creek [High School] and look forward to attending an academically hard school like SIU," Love said. "Once I met their coach, Audra Notwehr, I loved her, she is very smart and supportive, she also is a very great coach. I also met all the girls on my official visit and loved them as well, they were all very supportive."

PENSACOLA -- Bayview Park tennis courts dedicated a memorial plaque in memory of Bayview tennis instructor and player Larry Caton on Dec. 28, 2009. "For many Pensacola tennis players, Larry Caton was synonymous with the Bayview Park tennis courts," wrote the Pensacola News-Journal. "His presence as both teacher and player was an almost daily occurrence for 50 years." Caton passed on Feb. 25, 2009...

The City of Pensacola and the Roger Scott Tennis Center will celebrate the grand opening of the new claycourts beginning at 4 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2010. For more info go to www.playpensacola.com.

ST. AUGUSTINE -- USTA Florida will host a USTA Jr. Team Tennis Open House in St. Augustine on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at 6-7:30 p.m. at the St. Augustine Public Library, 1960 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Come learn more about Jr. Team Tennis and the upcoming spring season in St. Augustine and the surrounding area. Tallahassee USTA Jr. Team Tennis participants came together at the end of November to celebrate the season, with six teams of 85 players competing in round-robin games, King of the Court and Beat the Pro with area pros Nathalie Portmann Phelps, Glen Howe, Florida State University Men's Tennis coaches Nick Crowell and Dwayne Hultquist, and members of the FSU men's and women's tennis teams. "I'm so excited to get a tennis trophy, but it's really great that it has my name on it," said player Madison Lane. Ida Thompson, USTA Florida local league coordinator thanked the many people who made the Fall 2009 season a success, including Jr. Team Tennis Committee members and parent captains Leigh Ceci, Gina Ragan, Libby Thomson, Julie Steinmeyer, Linda Grady, Brian Bellamy, and Brian Lockwood. ACES -- 100-year-old Roger Gentilhomme was a special guest at the USTA Florida Annual Meeting in early December 2009, then days later claimed gold in his age group at the Florida Senior Games State Championships. Also winning gold in his age group was James Kales, a 95-year-old Bonita Springs resident. Both men also competed in singles bowling on Sunday and each set records in their respective age groups...

Philip DeRitis has been named director of tennis at Paseo, a private resort community in Fort Myers...

The University of Wisconsin announced that Plantation native Audra Cohen, the 2007 NCAA singles champion for the University of Miami, has signed on as the new women's assistant coach...

Boca Raton tennis instructor Kennis Collins, 51, won $1,589,193 at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in December playing the Jeopardy! MegaJackpot game. Collins says he will take his first vacation in four years with the winnings, but that his tennis students don't need to worry about losing their coach. "I love teaching tennis," said the former coach of WTA pro Ahsha Rolle, who played his college tennis at Grambling. It was the fourth $1 million-plus slot win in the past 20 months at the casino.

BRADENTON -- State College of Florida (SCF) has named two-time Australian Open women's doubles champion Betsy Nagelsen McCormack as the first women's tennis coach in school history. SCF will begin competing at the Division I level in the fall of 2010. "As a long-time admirer of Betsy's tennis accomplishments, I am very excited that she has agreed to come to SCF as our first women's tennis coach," said SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner. "There is no doubt in my mind that she will lead SCF to national prominence."

The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort reopened on Dec. 18, 2009, after closing in September due to a long legal fight between the owners and the individual condo owners who refused to pay for maintenance and repairs. Dr. Murf Klauber, the operating manager, said they "worked to try and get the hotel opened quickly and apologized to their guests and employees who were caught when the resort closed up," according to the local ABC television affiliate.

LUTZ -- The Cheval Golf & Country Club will host the second annual USTA Women's $25,000 Red Rose Inn and Suites Tennis Classic on Jan. 17-24, 2010. The tournament, a USTA Pro Circuit event, is the largest professional tennis tournament in Hillsborough County. Last year's champion, Sharon Fichman, and finalist, Lauren Albanese, both competed in the French Open several months later in 2009. This year's tournament will benefit the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, which will receive part of the proceeds from the event. To learn more about the Foundation, please visit www.lkcf.org. The tournament will also feature a wildcard event on Jan. 2-4, 2010, which will award the champion a spot into the main draw, and the finalist a spot in the qualifying event. The wildcard tournament is open to all women, with the entry deadline on Dec. 31, 2009. Registration is available online at www.acesportsgroup.com.

PALM BEACH -- According to the Palm Beach Daily News, First Serve of the Palm Beaches President Paul Van der Grift has expanded First Serve youth tennis to the entire county, forging relationships with area clubs including BallenIsles, East Point Racquet and Country Club as well as the city of West Palm Beach public tennis facilities to form a county-wide USTA Jr. Team Tennis league for beginner and intermediate players. Van der Grift and First Serve Executive Director Henry Guignet put the league together with the help of USTA Florida regional Tennis Program Coordinator Janet Sprague.

PALM BEACH GARDENS -- From computerized wellness systems to a luxurious spa to a Kinesis Wall that is "the ultimate in functional training" to world-class tennis court design, BallenIsles state-of-the-art Sports Complex debuted on Dec. 9, 2009. The 62,000 square-foot facility is adjacent to a 22-court tennis complex complete with an exhibition tennis court and stadium seating, featuring a pro shop and Bistro 105, a "casually elegant" restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining. The grand opening celebration featured a five-piece Dixieland Band and appearances by former Ladies Wimbledon Champion Virginia Wade and International Tennis Hall of Famer Fred Stolle.

Palm Beach Gardens' resident Serena Williams was named the Associated Press' Female Athlete of the Year. Williams received 66 of 158 votes cast, beating out No. 2 finisher Zenyatta, the first female horse to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. "People realize that I'm a great player, and one moment doesn't define a person's career," Williams told the AP in regard to her outburst toward a linesperson at the US Open that resulted in her default in the semifinals. "And I was right, for the most part: It wasn't right the way I reacted -- I never said it was -- but I was right about the call...In 2002, I just was really dominant, and I think in 2009, I brought that back. I kind of became that player again."
