Ocala Leads Titlists at USTA Florida Combo Doubles Chps.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jan. 19, 2010 -- Ocala was the lone two-division winner over the weekend at the 2009 season-ending USTA Florida Combo Adult Doubles 5.5/8.5 & Combo Senior Section Championships, Jan. 15-17, 2010, held at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.

Joining Ocala among the division winners were Broward County, Jacksonville, Lee/Charlotte counties, Polk County, South Miami-Dade and Tampa.

The Polk County teams proved the most competitive during the weekend, winning the Senior Men’s 7.5 title, and finishing runner-up in the Men’s 8.5 (finishing runner-up to Tampa), Women’s 5.5 (losing to Ocala) and Senior Women’s 7.5 divisions (losing to Jacksonville). Other runner-up teams (see below) were from St. Pete/Clearwater (2), Gainesville/Lake City, Lee/Charlotte and Naples.

"The second weekend of the Combo Section Championships fared no better with challenging weather," said USTA Florida League Coordinator Jodi Manning, who experienced sleet during the previous week's Combo Championships. "Friday was perfect tennis weather but we were greeted with rain on Saturday morning. Matches did not begin until 2 p.m. and finished around 10:30 p.m. Sunday matches were delayed until 11 a.m., but once the rain gave way, the wind was horrendous. Huge gusts of wind all afternoon made for tough playing conditions. But, the players were troopers and were gracious to the end. The tournament staff for both weekends were outstanding and I appreciate all their efforts."

USTA Combo Doubles is one of the fastest-growing leagues across the country. How does Combo Doubles work?

USTA Combo Doubles combines two different NTRP levels on the same court, with the combined NTRP of both players determining the league division. For example, in the 6.5 league, a 3.0 3.5 make up one team. There are three doubles courts to a team match, and the NTRP combinations between a pair of doubles players cannot exceed a 0.5 differential. Leagues are divided by 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5 divisions.
